Mouthguards

At Steven A. Puma, D.D.S we recommend that a mouthguard be part of every athlete's gear, no matter the sport. Parents should make sure their children are protected. Even adults and weekend athletes need to protect their smiles and preserve their health. Wear a mouthguard at all times when playing sports. It’s always best to wear a mouthguard custom-fitted by your dentist, especially if you wear bridges or braces. Don’t wear removable appliances like retainers when playing sports.

If you have any questions about dental health for athletes, please call our office at (855) 853-1696 and we’ll be happy to help you find the answers.

Dry Mouth: More Than Just a Nuisance

It should be easy to seal an envelope, but those who suffer from a condition called xerostomia, or dry mouth, usually have to reach for some tape instead. Dry mouth can not only hinder your enjoyment of food, but affect the health of your teeth. Heavy plaque and food accumulations tend to occur with this condition, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Saliva is the body's self-cleansing mechanism. It helps remove food, debris, and plaque from the tooth surfaces, protecting you from oral diseases. It cleans your teeth and neutralizes acids, which prevents tooth decay. People who have dry mouth are very susceptible to cavities, especially on the roots of their teeth, so please call us today at (855) 853-1696 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Steven Puma.

How Does Toothpaste Work?

Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) in toothpaste removes calcium and magnesium from the saliva so they can't form tartar on your teeth. Some toothpastes contain potassium nitrate to build protection against the pain of sensitive teeth. Baking soda adds foam and scouring ability and can fight acid-loving bacteria.

Peroxide toothpastes not only lighten the teeth but also kill germs. Finally, sweeteners and flavorings are added to mask the taste so that you'll use it. Call Steven A. Puma, D.D.S at (855) 853-1696 and we’ll be happy to recommend a toothpaste that’s right for you.
